Waarom ‘de ziel van Europa’?

Europa wordt aangevallen. We kunnen deze dreiging alleen afwenden als Europa eensgezind is. Zolang eensgezindheid ontbreekt, is Europa een speelbal van kwade machten.

I read this below in De Standaard’s newsletter: I think then: If Putin-Russia conquers/russifies Ukraine/adds it to its sphere of influence, then Russia de facto borders Hungary, right? And that is precisely what Orban does not want. At least, he says. So how can this war NOT also be a war of Hungary? Indeed, if Ukraine becomes Russian, Hungary will become a buffer state between Russia and the European Union.

Below is the quote from De Standaard’s newsletter:

“At the far-right National Conservatism Conference in Brussels, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban (Fidesz) has denied maintaining what he calls an “alliance” with Russia. This after being asked about criticism from opponents that he would have very close ties to Putin’s Russia. The two heads of government do have one common interest, according to Orban: maintaining a buffer state between Russia and Hungary.

“We never want to have a shared border with Russia again,” the Hungarian prime minister said. According to him, Ukraine today is “nothing more than a protectorate of Europe, without the help of the West the country would not exist – but it is no longer a sovereign state.”

Ukraine, according to Orban, does have the right to defend itself against Russian aggression, “but it is not Hungary’s war,” he said. “Nevertheless, Ukraine must also realize that it is a buffer state. What name that buffer state has does not matter.”

The Hungarian prime minister mainly criticizes the European Union’s geopolitical stance. The EU, according to Orban, is using the wrong strategy by providing aid to Ukraine and should be much more committed to bringing about a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine. “I think what the EU is doing is bad, since it is not aiming for a ceasefire. We are supporting a country that cannot win the war. It is not about an ‘alliance’ with Putin, but about achieving a ceasefire and geopolitical realities,” the Hungarian prime minister concluded. I repeat: If Putin-Russia conquers/russifies Ukraine/adds it to its sphere of influence, then Russia de facto borders Hungary, right? And that is precisely what Orban does not want. At least, he says. So how can this war NOT also be a war of Hungary? Indeed, if Ukraine becomes Russian, Hungary will become a buffer state between Russia and the European Union.
